Myth by Ron Willis

Myth

Yesterday, I looked in the mirror,
and I saw, standing in my shoes, a fool.
...A fool searching for hearts,
but without a heart to offer.

Today , I looked into the mirror,
and again, I saw a fool.
A fool waiting for love to come to me,
but with no sign of love in the reflection.

Tomorrow, I don't think I will look in the mirror.
I think I should, instead, look inside,
and see what I have to offer.
Find a way to unlock ancient doors
that hide all hopes and dreams,
cast aside but not forgotten.

The greatest storytellers pull words out of the air
and create pictures so real, they must be true.
For how many years now have I been describing
a gentle heart that, maybe, never existed at all?
Where is my heart, have I hidden it so well
that not even I can find it?
How do I offer what is only
faint memory and myth?

Heart of a Woman by Ron Willis

Heart of a Woman

Jesus picked flowers for his muse,
not knowing what He might lose,
...putting so much trust in the heart of a woman.

'If I were you, I'd love me from now on.'
was the line He used, and it had to be done,
Even Jesus did what He had to do for the heart of a woman.

She never said no, and she never said yes,
and she never gave it too much thought, I guess,
and she never knew the sacrifice made for the heart of a woman.

Jesus, I think, loved Mary Magdalene,
and He thought of her at night when He couldn't sleep,
but I doubt He ever understood the heart of a woman.

Blue Sonnet by Ron Willis

,Blue Sonnet

A pallid sun has tumbled from the sky, harvest moon is rising blue,
Forlorn, I pine under nameless stars, and I wonder where are you.
...A night bird whistles I'm the one, coyote swears it was never me,
I'm blinded by starlight, bright, you are out there, but I can't see.

Autumn maples whisper in the dark, tall grass beckons for me to come,
I search for you in dreams, waiting, hoping some day to be the one.
The one who holds you breathlessly, who kisses the night safe,
I carry this torch as is my wont, for I know no other way.

The deep night is my safe place, I am beautiful in the dark,
Alas, dawn must find this weathered face, and beauty is but a lark.
The sun has tumbled from the sky, the moon refuses the night,
I'm left standing in the pitch, and you are nowhere in sight.

You might never love me, and maybe you'll never know...
